In this game, what's benefit of biding vs attacking? I guess it doesn't anger anyone, but since there's no punishment for attacking incorrectly, biding seems pretty silly to me.

Basically if you shield and no one attacks you, you lose a life.
Biding vs Raising shield has pros and cons.
I've won a game before by only biding.

No I get why it doesn't make sense to only shield. But why would you bide over attacking since neither costs you anything and one has a chance to hurt your opponents and another doesn't?
It might just be in case people are vengeful for being attacked, but that just becomes WIFOM, which the whole game is basically. The only thing you can really do to increase your odds is never bide

You could well win only biding but it's the suboptimal play by any objective measure.

If you lost a life for attacking incorrectly, that would make biding much more potentially useful.

Yeah I just checked, most versions of this game on MS I can find have players dying if they shoot someone and miss. You don't have that, so there are no consequences for shooting incorrectly, so it makes 0 sense to ever bide.
With that said, players are still doing it for some reason.

Mipha loses a life without taking anyone else out for no reason because she decided to bide.

Biding does have it's advantages, if the other players are more likely to block than attack then biding means that the other players lose a life. Player A: Block Player B: Block If Player C attacks then whoever they attack is essentially saved from losing a life. If Player C bides then both A and B lose a life
But yeah ultimately I do agree that attacking is generally better.
If there were more players/more lives then I think making attacking have a negative effect if you're wrong would've been the right way to go but with so few this works out really well

That's a good point about the other players shielding.
I'm not saying you designed it poorly, I agree with the smaller group that not having players die for attacking incorrectly makes sense. But I do think a consequence of that is that biding becomes dramatically less efficacious, and it's silly that the players are doing it so much.

90% sure that 2 people with 1 life each becomes a stalemate because optimal play says attack every time
